Goodlawyer’s Fixed Fee Services

Goodlawyer offers a small menu of Fixed Fee Services (i.e., services with a price set by Goodlawyer). Our current Fixed Fee Services and respective pricing can be found listed in these places in Goodlawyer’s Info Centre.

Not all legal services carry the same complexity. So Goodlawyer has clearly stated that all listed prices are a minimum “starting at” price for a Basic case. If the case does not fit into the scope that Goodlawyer has priced for the Fixed-Fee service, Lawyers have the ability to create a custom quote, so long as they can explain and justify it to their Client.

💡
Legal services not covered by Goodlawyer’s Fixed Fee menu can be Quoted as Custom Services.

Basic Fixed Fee Services

Basic Fixed Fee Services are those that can be efficiently completed with less customization from the Lawyer. These services are typically meant for standard or less complicated matters.

Basic Fixed Fee Services are designed to get the job done at an affordable price. Typically, they rely on using a quality precedent (such as those found on Practical Law) , which results in time savings for the lawyer.

Bundled Services

Bundling Services make it easier and more affordable for clients to book multiple related services, while also allowing Lawyers to book bigger jobs and efficiently provide related legal services.

For example, the Website Bundle includes both the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

Bundles function like any other Fixed Fee Service on Goodlawyer’s menu.

What is Included in Each Fixed Fee Service?

Along with the deliverable and scope outlined on the Goodlawyer Info Centre, all Fixed Fee and Custom Services delivered over the platform include one round of “minor revisions”, which means any other work related to the deliverable that takes the lawyer less than 30-minutes to complete.

Any revisions requiring time beyond the 30-minutes should be quoted for unless there was an error made by the lawyer (in which case you are expected to correct the error for free).

How do I explain the difference between basic and custom services to my Client?

When discussing the difference between Basic and Custom Services, the main point to convey is that the more customized the work, the more expensive it becomes.

A useful analogy to help explain the difference between Basic and Custom Services is the difference between going to a restaurant and hiring a personal chef.

When you go to a restaurant, you are picking from a predetermined menu. You can customize your order in some ways (e.g., choosing the sides you would like, and how you would like your entree cooked). Your options are constrained by the menu.

By doing this, the restaurant can more efficiently prep their food, and your dinner does not cost as much as it would if they had to create it from scratch. But if you hired a personal chef, you could ask for whatever you want and customize each meal to your personal desires! Sounds perfect, but it comes at a much higher price. Granted, this analogy is not perfect.

Basic Services can be delivered at the listed price because the expectation is that lawyers are working off trusted precedents (typically from Practical Law) and are not drafting the agreement from scratch. The more nuanced the client’s needs, the more customization their legal services will require. This customization comes at a higher cost.

Again, referring to the Goodlawyer Info Centre should help you justify when a custom quote is needed as all of the basic Fixed-Fee prices have been outlined and scoped, with many reasons why a service might require a Custom quote listed as well.

💡
The best practice is to: 1) Explain the pros and cons of the Basic and Custom tier to the client. 2) Make your recommendation to the client that best aligns with their circumstance.

Ultimately, it is up to the client to decide.

Do bundles come in custom tiers?

Yes, Goodlawyer cannot predict and scope every permutation and combination of legal services that a Client might need. Lawyers must use their discretion and best judgement to recommend services that are appropriate to their Client’s needs, be that a fully customized bundle, basic Fixed-Fee bundles, or a combination of basic Fixed-fee services with additional custom work.

How do I determine the price for a Custom Service? Use your judgement to determine a price. If you're unsure, please contact the Legal Concierge™ Team. We can look through the pricing of similar Line Items in our CRM to help you determine a range, however the details of a service are unknown so complexity may vary.

What if I believe the client requires a custom service, but the Client doesn’t agree?

When a client is reluctant to accept a custom service, explain to them what will be left out or not addressed by a Basic Service.

If the client still wishes to proceed with the Basic Service, ultimately it is their decision.

In these cases, the best practice is to let the client know in writing the reasons for your recommendation. This helps avoid misunderstandings and protects the lawyer in the event of a dispute.
